Richard inherited from his father lands in Headcorn, but in 1628 he moved to Cranbook, where his wife had relatives. She, by the will of her uncle, Francis Fowle of Cranbrook, clothier, dated 8 Oct 1632 and proved 3 Apr 1633, was to receive his messuages in Cranbrook, after the death of his widow, Elizabeth Fowle. (abstract of will in NEHGR v75 p229). In 1637/8 Richard Borden emigrated from Cranbrook to New England, and settled at Portsmouth, RI, where he held various public offices.
Was member of a committee to threat with the Dutch, 18 May 1653, Assisstant at Portsmouth 1653-54, Treasurer 1654-55, Commissioner 1654, '56-57, and Duputy from Portsmouth to the RI General Assembly 1667, '70.
He was a surveyor and acquired large tracts of land in RI and in East Jersey (Monmouth County). He was buried in the burial ground of the Society of Friends at Portsmouth. His nuncupative will, of which an abstact is given in Austin's "Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island" was admitted to probate by the town council of Portsmouth 31 May 1671. It mentions his wife Joan and all his children except Richard and Elizabeth, who probably died young.
