He inherited his father's land in Smarden, Kent, England. Probably he was the John Borden who married at Headcorn, 21 Apr 1629, Elizabeth Clagget, who must have died soon afterwards, as he appears in 1635 on the shipping list of the Elizabeth & Ann, bound for New England, aged 28 years, with a wife Joan, aged 23 years, a son Matthew, aged 8 years, and a daughter Elizabeth, aged 3 years.
