He was as prominent a man in church and town matters as his father. In 1684 the town granted him a home lot of 4 acres in Scraping Hole Plain. In Dec: 1702 he is appointed fence viewer for Centinel Hill field. Dec. 9: 1707 the town appoints Jeremiah Johnson to audit the accounts with the town treasurers for the last year. The children of Jeremiah Jr. and Elizabeth Johnson were: Gideon born 1694, Joseph born 1696, Benajah born July 24-1704, Abner born Apr. 10-1709. (Seymour Past and Present pp. 495.) Jeremiah Jr. died Dec. 11-1726. [Jacobus (NEHGR v78p259) says there are errors in this ref., and adds a daughter Eliazabeth b. 1701] New Haven Probate Records, vol. 5, pp. 341. "Jan. 17-1727 estate of Jeremiah Johnson Jr. late of Derby, Ct. Elizabeth, widow and Benajah, son named executors. pp. 363, Invent. of Jeremiah Johnson Jr. dec'd in the year 1726." 2 guns, 1 cutlass, 2 # of powder, 7 # of lead, House and homestead, 45 acres of land, another homestead, 88 acres of land besides many other items. On pp. 401. New Haven Probate Records is given Benajah's account as administrator, mentions a married daughter [probably Elizabeth, b. 1701] and Tamar Wooster. (pp. 433.) Joseph Johnson one of the elder sons, 2 younger brothers. Division of property, To widow house etc. on Sentinel Hill. To Gideon, sawmill and land etc. Joseph . . . Benajah 1/2 that was John's. Abner 1/2 that was John's. New Haven Probate Records, vol. 9, pp. 78. In 1756, Deacon Gideon and Lieut. Joseph Johnson both of Derby, heirs of Mr. Jeremiah Johnson Jr. petition for a settlement, the Dower of their mother being undivided. Deacon Gideon has 2/7 as eldest son, Joseph . . Benajah and Abner each 1/7. Zerviah (Johnson) Baldwin dec'd. her children 1/7. Elizabeth (Johnson) Chatfield, dec'd her children 1/9. Jeremiah Johnson Jr. is buried in the Colonial burying ground Derby, Ct. with his father and son Benajah.573 | ||||||||||||||
